ബിലെ ഇനിയും വളരെക്കാലം കുട്ടിയായിത്തന്നെ ഇരിക്കുകയില്ലല്ലോ. കുട്ടി വലുതായി. സ്കൂളില്‍ ചേര്‍ത്തു. ഈശ്വര ചന്ദ്ര വിദ്യാസാഗരന്റെ മെട്രോ പോളിട്ടന്‍ സ്കൂളിലാണ് ആദ്യം ചേര്‍ത്തത്. ഇവിടെ ബിലെ എന്നാ പേര് പറ്റില്ല. അത് കൊണ്ടു നരേന്ദ്ര നാഥന്‍ എന്ന പേരാണ് ചേര്‍ത്തത്. ഈ പേര് ബിലേക്ക് ഭയങ്കര ഇഷ്ടമായി. നരേന്ദ്രന്‍ എന്നാല്‍ മനുഷ്യരില്‍ ശ്രേഷ്ഠന്‍, നരേന്ദ്ര നാഥനോ അവരിലും ശ്രേഷ്ഠന്‍.

സ്കൂളില്‍ രണ്ടു വിഷയങ്ങളില്‍ നരേന്ദ്രന്‍ വളരെ വിഷമം കാണിച്ചു. ഇംഗ്ലീഷും കണക്കും തീരെ പഠിക്കില്ല. 'ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് ഒരു വിദേശ ഭാഷയാണ്. ഇംഗ്ലീഷ്കാരുടെ ഭാഷ. അതെന്തിന് നാം പഠിക്കുന്നു? അതിനേക്കാള്‍ ആദ്യം മാതൃഭാഷയായ ബംഗാളി പഠിക്കണം. അത് നന്നായി പഠിക്കും' എന്നായിരുന്നു നരേന്ദ്രന്റെ അഭിപ്രായം. എന്തായാലും വളരെ പറഞ്ഞു മനസിലാക്കിയതിനു ശേഷം നരേന്ദ്രന്‍ ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് പഠിക്കാന്‍ തുടങ്ങി. പിന്നീട്, താന്‍ ഇംഗ്ലണ്ട്ല്‍ വെച്ച് ചെയ്ത പ്രസംഗത്തില്‍ ഇംഗ്ലീഷ്കാര്‍ക്ക് കൂടി അതിശയം തോന്നത്തക്ക വിധത്തില്‍ അത്രയും നന്നായി ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് പഠിച്ചു.

കണക്കു ക്ലാസ്സില്‍ നരേന്ദ്രന്‍ തല തിരിച്ചിരിക്കുകയേ ഉള്ളു. കൂട്ടലും കിഴിക്കലും ഗുണിക്കലും ഹരിക്കലും എല്ലാം കണ്ടു പറയും. ' ഞാന്‍ പലചരക്ക് കടയൊന്നും തുടങ്ങാന്‍ പോകുന്നില്ല. അത് കൊണ്ടു ഇതൊന്നും എനിക്ക് പഠിക്കണ്ട. ' അങ്ങനെ കണക്കു അദ്ദേഹത്തിനു ഒരിക്കലും ഇഷ്ടമില്ലായിരുന്നു. ക്രമേണ നരേന്ദ്രന്‍ വലുതായപ്പോള്‍ സാഹിത്യവും ചരിത്രവും പഠിക്കുന്നതില്‍ വളരെയധികം ശ്രദ്ധ കാണിച്ചു.

അത് കൊണ്ടു നരേന്ദ്രന്‍ രാവും പകലും പുസ്തകം വായിച്ചു കൊണ്ടു തന്നെ ഇരുന്നു എന്ന് അര്‍ത്ഥമാക്കണ്ട. കുട്ടിക്കാലം മുതല്‍ക്കേ മനസ്സിന് ഏകാഗ്രത നന്നായി ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നത് കൊണ്ടു അല്പം പരിശ്രമം കൊണ്ടു തന്നെ വളരെയധികം പഠിക്കാനും മനസിലാക്കാനും ഓര്‍മിക്കാനും അദ്ദേഹത്തിനു കഴിഞ്ഞിരുന്നു. ബാക്കി സമയം മുഴുവന്‍ പല വിധം കളികളിലും വിനോദങ്ങളിലും ആണ് അദ്ദേഹം ചെലവഴിച്ചിരുന്നത്. ക്രിക്കറ്റ് കളിയിലും ഗുസ്തി പിടുത്തത്തിലും നരേന്ദ്രന്‍ വളരെ സമര്‍ത്ഥനായിരുന്നു. ഇടയ്ക്കിടെ കൂട്ടുകാരോട് കൂടി വഞ്ചി കളിക്കാന്‍ പോകും. ഒരു ദിവസം കളി കഴിഞ്ഞു മടങ്ങുമ്പോള്‍ ഒരു കൂട്ടുകാരന്‍ വഞ്ചിയില്‍ ച്ഛര്‍ദ്ധിച്ചു വഞ്ചിക്കാരന്‍ ആരെയും കരക്കിരങ്ങുവാന്‍ സമ്മതിച്ചില്ല. കഴുകി വൃത്തിയാക്കി കൊടുക്കണമെന്ന് നിര്‍ബന്ധം പിടിച്ചു. നരേന്ദ്രന്‍ സൂത്രത്തില്‍ ചാടി കര പറ്റി. ഗംഗാ നദിയുടെ തീരത്തില്‍ രണ്ടു വെള്ള പട്ടാളക്കാര്‍ നടക്കുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. തന്റെ കൂട്ടുകാരെ വഞ്ചിയില്‍ നിന്നും ഇറങ്ങാന്‍ സമ്മതിക്കുന്നില്ലെന്നു മുറി ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് ഇല്‍ നരേന്ദ്രന്‍ അവരെ മനസിലാക്കി. പട്ടാളക്കാര്‍ വഞ്ചിയുടെ അടുത്ത് വന്നു വഞ്ചിക്കാരനോട് പറഞ്ഞു, കൂട്ടുകാരെ വിടുവിച്ചു. നരേന്ദ്രന്റെ സാമര്‍ത്ഥ്യം കൂട്ടുകാരെല്ലാം പ്രശംസിച്ചു. സന്തോഷത്തോടെ വീട്ടിലേക്കു മടങ്ങി പോയി.

I hear the policeman say,
"The other guy is drunk," Mom,
And now I'm the one who will pay.

I'm lying here dying, Mom....
I wish you'd get here soon.
How could this happen to me, Mom?
My life just burst like a balloon..

There is blood all around me, Mom,
And most of it is mine.
I hear the medic say, Mom,
I'll die in a short time.

I just wanted to tell you, Mom,
I swear I didn't drink.
It was the others, Mom.
The others didn't think.

He was probably at the same party as I.
The only difference is, he drank
And I will die.

Why do people drink, Mom?
It can ruin your whole life.
I'm feeling sharp pains now.
Pains just like a knife.

The guy who hit me is walking, Mom,
And I don't think it's fair.
